Abstract

The aim of this work was to design an urban park space for people in the early and middle stages of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The project is being implemented in Krakow, in cooperation with the Municipal Greenery Administration. The Garden of Memory is a separate enclave in the Aleksandra Park, in the Bieżanów district. It aims to provide the sensory and cognitively stimulating environment these people need, using the right spatial and functional structure, facilities to improve accessibility, and plants selected with the participation of potential users. My assumption is that a green environment is a major factor in improving the well-being of the target group, and has a therapeutic effect in terms of stress reduction and sensory stimulation. Through references to familiar landscapes, it also supports cognitive processes, and is an important factor in the individual or the group’s sense of belonging. The research conducted for the study helped us identify the plant species the elderly and people with dementia and AD remember particularly well. These help activate positive memories of nature (memory triggers). Research on preferences for various forms of landscape aimed to determine those features that evoke a sense of familiarity and intimacy. Including them in the design can improve the target group’s well-being, satisfaction, and comfort in using the green space. I believe implementing the project will improve the well-being of people with dementia and AD, enhance their sense of dignity, increase their autonomy, and provide social benefits to a wide group of people (including carers of people with dementia and AD). The aim of the project is also to assist the social inclusion of people with dementia and AD, making this group visible, active, and present in the public space.
