Abstract

item.page.abstract.en
Competitions for students of the School of Fine Arts in Kraków were an important element of the teaching process in the years 1873–1893. Prizes were awarded for drawings and paintings made from an antique cast and model, an academic nude from a male model, a sculptural work and a drawing task from perspective. Distinguished students received cash prizes funded by the Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Kraków. Students from the composition department led by Jan Matejko were honored with medals. Awardwinning works were shown at an exhibition at the end of the school year. A fixed schedule of competitions was developed, which motivated students to work and prepared them to participate in art exhibitions. Among those entering the competition were students who became outstanding artists after completing their education. They included: Stanisław Wyspiański, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Mehoffer, Alfred Daun, Wincenty Wodzinowski, Włodzimierz Tetmajer. The issues discussed in the article concern: the rules of organized competitions, the topics of the competitions, awarded students, the didactic process at the School of Fine Arts and the role of the teaching staff in artistic education.
