Abstract

This article discusses a painting on canvas with an image of the Virgin and Child from the parish church in Sucha Beskidzka. It takes into account the techniques and technology used in its execution in the context of the transformations which the image underwent over time – these revelations were made possible by the conservation work carried out. During this work, an attempt was made to determine when the work was created based on both formal and stylistic elements characteristic of the techniques used or of the artist himself. Particular attention was focused on Mary’s crown, the jewels around her neck and adorning her robes, as well as to the decoration of the Infant’s tunic, with its unusual use of pouncing. When a contemporarily made tracing of the pattern from the work in question is applied to other works, it transpires that it corresponds to the ornamentation on the white tunic of Christ in the painting depicting Our Lady and Child from Stara Wieś, as well as in a painting from Rudy Wielkie, which is identical to the image in Stara Wieś. This detail plays an extremely important role as it also provides a clue to the provenance of the work and links it to the work of the Małopolska region from the first half, and possibly even the first quarter, of the seventeenth century. These
important details, which served to determine the time and place of the production of an early copy of the Hodegetria from the Jasna Góra sanctuary in Częstochowa, were accompanied by physico-chemical studies, including MA-XRF and SEM-EDX analyses, identifying, for example, the presence of titanium in the earth pigments.
